Here's a little something I found on Ekonomika (list about Czech economy).
I thought it might steer us back a bit toward Hungary.

>There is one thing that I still can't understand: why are the reforming
>economies in Eastern Europe (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary,
>etc.) doing so poor?
>
>You can can object that they have achieved major successes in the
>economy transition, monetary stabilisation, etc, but WHY IS THEIR
>GROWTH SO SLUGGISH? Especially when compared with China, Thailand,
>Malaysia or Mexico. They say that Eastern European countries possess
>skilled work force, proximity to the West, and almost any comparative
>advantage you can invent. Then what makes them laggards?
>
>Looking forward to your explanation.
>

Any ideas?

I am planning to send some books to Budapest, to a library in a teaching
college there that needs English language books on American history and
politics to supplement its American Studies program (for those interested),
and I would like to know if anyone can tell me the least expensive, as well
as the most reliable, way of sending books to Budapest. Is it best to send
books in bulk, or little by little?

If there are any persons out there who have experiences with this I would
appreciate any knowledge you can pass on to me.

Thanks,

Jim

Zoli Fekete correcting my note to playing partner:
Well a black mark agains me, strike the Fekete from the posting. Just wait
until another Jeliko shows up then you can have revenge. :-)
Mea Culpa, mea ultima culpa.
The comment to the "other" Zoli stands, whether he plays or not.

Per se, anyone can say anything about modifying the Constitution,
eventually a lot of ratification votes are required and if it passes, then
obviously that is what the majority of the people want. Anyone also has the
right to disagree with the decision also but it will be only sour grapes.
Of course people periodically change their mind also as with the
prohibition. BTW constitutionally speaking there is nothing in there
specifically about school prayer or the oft quoted "separation of church
and state". The Constitution is rather specific about the wording. Please
remember also that the Congressional sessions do start with prayers, for
example. I am not sure either if the study of religions (all major ones at
least) is not or should not be a school study subject. It certainly has
more influence on a larger percentage of people's life than for
example homosexual life style. I did not feel oppressed in my early days in
Hungary by a school prayer and if the only oppression of the communist
system was the starting of the school day with a rousing "socialist" song,
I would have been very happy. Religion classes I have specifically enjoyed,
because being a Calvinist I could skip classes in an almost exclusivly
catholic school. It also gave me a good chance to mingle with the few other
non-catholics during the breaks.

IMO, the government got into a far larger percentage of our lives than the
Constitution gives them rights for. As a matter of fact my claim is "Thank
God for not getting all the government we have to pay for" BTW that could
be a good school prayer. I am for decreasing and localizing government as
much as possible. If to accomplish that, I (or rather my grandchildren)
have to pray in school, I am willing to compromise, nothing much tried so
far was very successful.

Considering that the House decides the funding for our national activities,
I would say yes it is on their shoulders to a larger extent than on the
Executive branch which has purloined the shouldering.

>I want to see in four years what he did about crime

To my knowledge, his term and all of that of the House memebers is two
years. So I can guess that yuo only expressed a personal wish to have him
and his cohorts in for four years. :-)

Let me see how much time does it take to teach kids that unprotected
(mainly) homosexual activity and sharing drug needles greatly magnifies the
AIDS risk. I personally prefer to teach that to my kids (and did)

Yes, unfortunately I remember Bush and the last two elections proved that
many other voters did also. As far as producing now something that in fact
works is to be seen. I am the eternal optimist, when something does not
work, vote for others, who at least have some new ideas that are not solely
"give us more money" because we know better how to spend it.

I would like to discontinue my subscription with this list. So
many of the messages have little to do with Hungarian culture
at all, but rather deal with minority issues in the United States,
etc., etc., often in a very negative way. Ms. Balogh's comments
are, of course, an exception.
